Confronting Environmental Risks

Published February 13, 2025

Dealing with Environmental risks isn’t just an option for holidays…or disasters like that we – well, I – have just experienced in Southern California. I recommend reading — no endorse – reading Garret Hardin’s “Tragedy of the Commons” which describes an economic dilemma in which individuals prioritize personal gain by exploiting shared resources, ultimately leading to overuse and harm to society as a whole. The consequences are not relegated to literature.

We are all in this together. The availability of natural resources like clean running water and electricity may be our normal expectations…but I think we have taken their continued accessibility for granted.

The collective implications cannot be thrown on the side the road like a discarded candy wrapper…it becomes a reality when you receive a cellphone message that clearly states “…Get Ready for Possible Evacuation & Grab your Emergency GoBag .” To where, when and how? It’s not pollyannish to thank first responders, firefighters and police – many of whom have also lost their own homes, yet they soldier on….

This is not the new reality…actually it just our recognition of the new reality that is late. We must learn how accept it …since “if” is just that receding image in our rearview mirror.

…may we all live to be well and thrive.
